INJURY BREAKS REMINDER – Medical Committee Notice

The BF Medical Committee reminds competition organisers and referees of the rules and process in relation to the timing of injury breaks.

In accordance with FIE rules the injury break is 5 minutes.

However, it is important to note that the injury break clock only starts once the full medical assessment has been made and a break deemed necessary.

The process is:

  1. Referee or other official calls for medic
  2. Medic assesses injury/cramp/medical problem
  3. Medic advises on outcome:
  • no action needed, continue bout
  • injury break so start treatment and injury break clock at the same time
  • withdrawal

5 minutes is the injury break time allowed for treatment and/or recovery, it does not include the assessment period.

At larger competitions, organisers may wish to consider having an assessing medic supported by the treatment medic(s). This allows for the assessors to go to move onto another case whilst treatment is being administered.
