Promising start for GB fencers on Wheelchair World Cup Circuit

The world of wheelchair fencing saw it’s first event of the 2014 World Cup Series commence in Malchow, Germany from 17th -19th January. 

The GB Squad was 8 fencers strong and the first day of competitiion saw both Gabi Down and Matt Campbell-Hill fence well to take quarter final places, with Down finishing sixth in the Women’s Cat A Epee and Campbell-Hill eighth in the Men’s Cat A Sabre.

Saturday and Sunday saw some steady fencing from the GB Squad who managed to accrue a respectable fifteen round of 16 places over the course of the event.  Despite initial disapointment for Piers Gilliver, who has been struggling with injury and failed to progress past the round of 16 by agonisingly loosing 15-14 to Hasan Zainulbadeen (IRQ) in both his Foil and Epee matches, there was surely some consolation for Gilliver whose final placing of 12th in the Men’s Cat A Epee was enough to boost his IWASF international ranking to tenth in the World in the Men’s Cat A Epee.

The Men’s Sabre Team of Matthew Campell-Hill, Daniel Puckey, Shah Rashid and Dan Smith ended the GB Squad’s first World cup of the season on a high note by taking the Bronze Medal defeating the German team 45 – 43.
