FIRST BF PARA FENCING RANKINGS SCHEME PILOT LAUNCHED

In a historic first for BF, a new pilot for Para Fencing rankings is now ready for publication, offering a clearer and more consistent view of performance across domestic and international competition.

The first full version of the BF Pilot Para Fencing Rankings has been produced, applying the existing points table in the BF Ranking Scheme and using pre-set event weightings. The approach brings together results from across the competition pathway, helping to reflect both consistency and performance at higher-level events.

As these rankings are part of a pilot, and we recognise that some athletes are currently taking time away from fencing, BF will not use them for selection or eligibility for international competition until after LA2028.

The BF Pilot Para Fencing Rankings are solely intended to support domestic activity. In particular, they will be used to seed domestic competitions and to assist event organisers planning wheelchair fencing events. The balance of weightings is intended to reflect the relative importance of each competition level, while still rewarding regular participation and progression.

The following event multipliers have been used for the pilot:

  • Domestic competition: 100
  • Senior Nationals: 200
  • Senior Open: 250
  • Satellite: 350
  • World Cup: 1,000
  • Major Championships: 1,200

BF Pilot Para Fencing Rankings are presented by weapon and structured across several views to support different uses. There is a single combined list covering all fencers, alongside more detailed breakdowns by category and competitive gender groupings.

You can now explore each set of rankings below:

Chris Price, BF Head of Paralympic Performance, said:

“This is an exciting step for us all as we look towards LA2028. A domestic and international rankings scheme can be used to support domestic competition, giving meaning to the results and hard work put into these events and giving them significance within the bigger picture of Para Fencing. The rankings can also be used as a development tool. By measuring progress through the pilot rankings scheme, we can guide people through the pathway to meet the level of our current world-class athletes. Thanks to the team for the initial work that has brought this pilot to life.”

Piers Gilliver said:

“When I started out, we didn’t have a Para Fencing ranking scheme. There were world level rankings, but nothing for someone starting their journey, no base level. The pilot rankings scheme means we can see our home-grown talent come up through the ranks and identify the next generation of champions.”

As the pilot rankings are used over the coming months, further refinements may be considered where needed in consultation with the community.

Subject to final confirmation, the BF Pilot Para Fencing Rankings will be published on the BF rankings page. Alongside this, the BF Ranking Scheme will be updated to reflect the para events.
