SAFETY INFORMATION – JACKETS AND BREECHES

Last updated 8th June 2026

Requirements for Jackets and Breeches vary by activity. For details on specific requirements by activity see EQUIPMENT BY ACTIVITY – SAFETY GUIDELINES.

  1. Fencers must wear jackets of appropriate size conforming at least to the minimum safety standard of CEN Level 1 and bearing the appropriate CEN safety mark.
  2. Where breeches are required, fencers must wear breeches of appropriate size conforming at least to the minimum safety standard of CEN Level 1 and bearing the appropriate CEN safety mark.
  3. There should be a minimum of 10cms (4 inches) overlap between breeches and jacket when the fencer is on guard.
  4. Jackets should fasten on the opposite side to the sword arm, or at the back.
  5. Breeches should reach and stay below the knee whilst fencing. Socks should be pulled up to meet the breeches with no skin showing.
  6. If both fencers are using non-electric foil blades or, at all three weapons size 0 blades, breeches may (except in BF licenced competitions) be replaced by full-length trousers or tracksuit trousers of sufficiently strong material, provided all openings/pockets are zipped/ sewn/taped closed.
  7. Clothing must not be used which is damaged, shows visible tears or weakened by excessive use.

Tracksuits over breeches – The wearing of tracksuit trousers over 350/800N breeches is currently allowed (competition and training), on condition that the trousers are tapered/straight cut (i.e. not baggy), with all openings and pockets zipped or sewn or taped closed.

Clubs/Competition organisers are required to put in place respectful and inclusive protocols (which respect religious beliefs, privacy, rights of minors and the desire to be accompanied) regarding any safety checks which should be communicated to participants in advance. Where U18s are involved these must involve the parent and the club/event welfare officer. In competition checks as to whether breeches are being worn must not be left to the referee, it is the responsibility of the welfare officer to inform the referees (potentially via DT) that the checks have been made.

Note that this does not apply to FIE or EFC competitions if held in the UK.

A final reminder

Everyone participating in fencing is responsible for safety. If you think that a fencer/your opponent is fencing with an unsafe or unsecured protective equipment please alert a club or competition official.

Every incident (accident, injury or near miss) must be recorded using this form.
