Budapest hosts second Epee Grand Prix of the season

The senior international season continued at the weekend with the second epee Grand Prix of the series in Hungary.

Men’s Epee – Budapest

A massive field of two hundred and ninety-six fencers took part in this event including Greg Allen, Philip Marsh and Nick Perry who were representing Great Britain.  Allen did not win any of his six first round fights which resulted in him missing the cut.  Marsh (V2D3) and Perry (V4D2) did make it through to the three-stage preliminary knockout.  Whilst Perry received a bye through the first fight, Backer (NOR) beat Marsh 15-10.  Perry then went on to beat Ajzenstadt (ISR) 14-10 before losing 15-10 to Szilagyi (ROU).

Nikolai Novosjolov (EST) took the gold medal beating Ivan Trevejo (FRA) 15-6 in the final.  Pavel Pitra (CZE) and Benjamin Steffen (SUI) completed the podium.

GB individual placings:  Perry 86th, Marsh 196th & Allen 289th.

Women’s Epee – Budapest

Another big field of two hundred and sixteen fencers, including Mary Cohen, Corinna Lawrence, Abbi Matthews and Katrina Smith, took part in the women’s event in Hungary.  Mathews (V1D5) and Smith (V0D6) did not make it through the first round but Cohen (V3D2) and Lawrence (V5D1) did.  In the first of two preliminary elimination fights Cohen beat Topic (CRO) 15-7 and Lawrence defeated Sidiropoulou-Christodoulou (GRE) 15-5.  In the second fights Khrapina (RUS) just edged out Cohen 14-13 and Tataran (ROU) eliminated Lawrence 15-8.

Korean fencer, Shin A Lam beat Ana Maria Branza (ROU) 9-5 in the gold medal match as two Russians took home the bronze medals – Tatyana Andryushina and Tatiana Logunova.

GB individual placings:  Lawrence 67th, Cohen 81st, Matthews 200th and Smith 213th.
