SENIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012 REPORT – DAY 2
USA win Men’s team Epee gold medal against France
The Senior World Championships concluded with Men’s Team Sabre in the Palace of Sports, Kiev, Ukraine.
Great Britain did not enter a team into this event but 22 other teams took to the piste. The event was won in spectacular style by the USA (Bratton, Kelsey, Mattern and reserve, Thompson) 44-37 against France (Borel, Lucenay and reserve, Grumier). The French team started the better of the two and were leading 13-6 but on came Bratton for the USA and scored eight hits to 4 against Lucenay (FRA). The momentum had shifted and by the end of the sixth bout the score was tied at 24-24, no small thanks to Mattern (USA) who took out Borel (FRA) 8-2. Thompson (USA) was substituted in and his efforts, plus those of team mate Mattern, put the USA 32-39 going into the last bout. French substitute, Grumier anchored the French team against Kelsey and simply left it too late to make his charge. He stepped into distance and was hit three times by the American and then appeared to leave it too late to make a charge. The USA team were deservedly crowned World Champions. The bronze medal match was won by Hungary who beat Italy 45-37.
