Klyushin Era Starts in Doha and Paris

The senior international season begins this week with events taking place in Doha, Qatar and Paris, France.

The world’s top men’s epeeists will begin proceedings with a Grand Prix starting in Doha on 16th January.  Gareth Thomas will be Great Britain’s sole representative in this competition.  The men’s event will conclude on 17th January which will also see the start of a women’s epee World Cup.  The field will include Britain’s top female epeeist, Corinna Lawrence whose goal this season is to improve on her world ranking of 90.

Paris will host the inaugural men’s foil World Cup of 2014 with no less than twelve fencers flying the flag for Great Britain (Archer, Bryant, Cook, Davis, Fitzgerald, Hendrie T., Kruse, Melia, Mepstead, Peggs, Rosowsky and Tofalides).  Last year’s event saw 180 fencers take part with Italian, Andrea Baldini taking the individual title.  Steady progress from the British contingent last season, including a Grand Prix win and European individual bronze for James Davis and a European team bronze, means hopes are high for continued success this season.

Head Coach, Andrey Klyushin, will lead the team into battle this season and speaking earlier this week said; “We have done a good preparation – plenty of work in the gym and on the piste.  We have just come back from a camp with the Polish National Team so we took part in many individual and team matches with them.  We are curious to see the results of our work and understand its implications for the future.  So we can’t wait for the first competitions!”.
