BF is inviting members and the wider fencing community to share their views on proposed changes to referee development pathways for both standing and wheelchair fencing.

Following work by the Referee Advisory Group (RAG), a consultation period is now open on a set of proposals designed to strengthen referee recruitment, development and progression across British fencing. The proposals aim to create clearer development opportunities and increase the depth and quality of refereeing at all levels.
The proposal introduces a revised five-tier pathway for referees. The aim is to provide clearer distinctions between qualification levels, improve development opportunities and create a structured route that better recognises those that want to actively develop their refereeing.
Under the proposed structure, referee development would be organised as follows:
Each stage will include clearly defined assessment requirements, with progression based on a combination of theory assessments and practical observations. A calendar of assessment opportunities is also being developed, including the potential use of GBR Pathway Camps to support and increase referee progression opportunities.
The proposal document also outlines a dedicated referee pathway for wheelchair fencing, designed with Chris Farren to sit alongside the standing referee pathway. This proposal aims to support the development of more wheelchair fencing referees and create a clearer route towards international refereeing opportunities.

Feedback from members, referees, athletes, coaches, clubs, competition organisers and other stakeholders will help shape the final framework before any changes are introduced.
