Yasmin Campbell was the star turn in Manchester
Yasmin Campbell, 14 years old, of Fighting Fit Fencing Club, produced a stunning display of fencing at the Manchester Cadet Foil circuit event at the weekend to take home the silver medal.
With seventy five fencers in the field the competition could not have started better for Yasmin as she won all six of her first round fights, dropping just nine hits. Ranked fourth for the direct elimination, Yasmin had a bye through the round of 64 before beating Andrea Maronet (BEL) 15-11, Tatiana Wong (SIN) 15-10 and Andrea Breteau (ESP) 15-4 to make the quarterfinals. Her victories meant that she avoided the repechage.
A tight 13-12 victory in a priority minute over Beatrice Kudlacek (AUT) followed by another victory over Breteau (this time 15-9) meant that she faced Nicole Wong (SIN) for the gold medal. Despite leading for most of the fight with good aggressive fencing, Yasmin’s opponent was able to adapt her defensive approach to win 15-13.
Head Coach of Fighting Fit Fencing Club, Ludo Sotto said; “We are very pleased and proud of Yasmin’s result – a fine example of hard work and dedication producing the result she deserved. I’d also like to thank the team of coaches and sports professionals at Fighting Fit who have helped us so much.”
Daniel Kiss and Harry Bird also made the quarterfinals of the men’s event.
