Luxembourg Hosts First Event of the Season

Matthew Cooper, Matthew Dickinson and Joshua Stevens all made the round of 32 at the 2016-17 season opener in Luxembourg.  The Junior Men’s Epee event boasted a field of one hundred and thirty-nine and the trio all made the elimination stages along with the six other British fencers.

Cooper went on to beat team mate, Russell 15-14 and Gally (FRA) 15-14 before losing 15-14 to Linnemann (DEN).  Dickinson demolished Stolar (SVK) 15-3 and then beat Weber (SUI) 15-13 before losing 155-11 to Dagani (SUI).  Stevens navigated his way through Onofre (POR) 15-11 and then Gundera (GER) 8-7 before falling to Toth (HUN) 15-3.

Owen Jordan, Benjamin Schneider and Aml Sinclair all made the round of 64 but William East and George Morris joined James Russell, going out in the 128.

Adrian Dabija (ROU) took the gold medal beating Jakub Jurka (CZE) in the final as the bronze medals went to Clement Dorigo (FRA) and Giacomo Paolini (ITA).

In the team event, Great Britain (Dickinson, Jordan, Russell and Sinclair) were edged out 45-34 in the round 16.  In the placings matches they beat Ireland 45-23 and Belgium 45-36 to finish ninth.  Poland beat France to the gold medal and the USA beat Switzerland for bronze.

GB individual placings:  Cooper 24, Dickinson 29, Stevens 31, Schneider 47, Sinclair 56, Jordan 60, Morris 90, East 102 and Russell 104.
