CROWN HILLS COMMUNITY COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP RENEWAL

We’re delighted to have renewed our partnership with Crown Hills Community College, who have been BF’s Official Training Partner since 2019.

Since 2019, Crown Hills Community College has been in partnership with BF as an ‘Official Training Partner’, allowing students to experience a sport not normally offered in state school education. Now, Crown Hills and BF are renewing their partnership, introducing more young people to fencing across the local community.

Crown Hills is a specialist sports college operating in Leicester City, North West Leicestershire, Hinckley and Bosworth, Blaby, Harborough, Rutland, Melton and Charnwood. They currently have over 1500 pupils and more than 200 staff members. Crown Hills emphasises physical education, staff and student wellbeing alongside strong student outcomes.

In 2019 shortly after partnering with BF, Crown Hills entered the British School Team Championships. There, the Girls U15 Sabre team won bronze for the first time in their school history. In 2022, BBC Leicester became interested in Crown Hills’ fencing programme due to it not normally being offered in state schools. They captured one of their weekly training sessions with a specialist coach.

The partnership allows them to deliver BF’s Core Coach programme to teachers, allowing them to deliver introductory fencing experiences to students in the area. An entry-point course, the Core Coach Offer is designed to connect activity providers and education sectors to the BF Coaching Framework. It provides delegates with the skills and knowledge to deliver a one-hour taster session or six-hour pre-planned taster programme.

Ian O’Flynn, Assistant Principal, said:

“We have delivered fencing in the curriculum to over 900 students as well as running an elite fencing programme. The partnership with BF has allowed us to train teachers across Leicester and Leicestershire so that fencing is now delivered in several local schools.”

Harry Brown, BF Head of Licensing, said:

“This partnership renewal is testament to the successful delivery of fencing at Crown Hills to their pupils. It evidences how the sport can be offered sustainably over many years, impacting school students in state education across the community.”
