Victoria Duxbury honoured for her fencing achievements

On 26th April 2013, seventeen year old, Victoria Duxbury became North Down’s Young Sports Person of the year 2012.  As all local schools and clubs are encouraged to nominate up to two athletes for this award the competition was fierce.  Duxbury was selected for the shortlist of eight candidates and presented with the award at an event held at the Marine Court Hotel in Bangor.

Duxbury’s impressive results in 2012 include becoming the Northern Ireland Senior Women’s Foil Champion, representing her country at the Junior Commonwealth Games and senior 5 Nations and competing at the UK School Games.  However she was also recognised for her coaching work at both her school and Belfast Fencing Club and her refereeing contributions on the North Ireland junior circuit.

The award was presented by former Olympic swimmer, Stephen Breen and the Chairman of North Down Sports Advisory Council, Geoffrey Weir.  Duxbury is in good company as the same award was presented to Rory McIlroy some years ago.
