Immediate Actions

  • If this is the first time you/your child has been selected for a major championships please read this guide to Major Events first before accepting selection.
  • Please check that you have a valid FIE Licence (for cadets who may be competing in the Junior event).
  • Check you have a valid Passport – (an ‘expiry date’ at least three months after the day you plan to leave ).

Travel - Entry and Exit Points

To support optimal performance for all Major Championships, fencers must arrive by the entry point to ensure sufficient event preparation and orientation time.

Athletes competing in Europe must arrive at the designated team hotel no later than 14:00, leaving a full day before the competition day.  This allows the fencer to recover from travel-related exhaustion, visit the venue, and complete weapons control. A full day is then available to sort out any kit issues and undertake final preparations before the competition.

e.g. If athletes are competing on Saturday, they should check in at the hotel by 14:00 on Thursday.

Travel with Minors

  • Minors Accompanied by Adult – If a child under 18 is travelling with someone who is not a parent or a legal guardian, the supervising adult must have a written and signed statement certifying that they have parental consent for the child.
  • Unaccompanied Travel Options – please contact [email protected] if you wish to discuss travel plans for unaccompanied minors. There may be the opportunity to travel on the same flights as designated support staff.

Team Hotel

BF will be making advance bookings for athletes and designated support staff. Once we have confirmed we will publish the details to allow personal coaches to make independent bookings in that hotel (please note that family members are not permitted to book into the team hotel)

Based on previous events, hotel bookings will be for five nights in twin rooms.
Group 1 – 20th Feb to 25th Feb
Group 2 –  21st Feb to 26th Feb
Group 3 –  25th Feb to 2nd Mar
Group 4 –  26th to 3rd Mar

Fencers who plan to arrive before or exit after the stated accommodation for the entry and exit points MUST source their accommodation. BF cannot provide additional accommodation nights for athletes.

All hotel rates are per room per night, including breakfast, based on entry and exit points.

Costs and Subsidies

Anticipated Costs (still tbc)

  • Entry Fees:  £175 (individual and team)
  • Hotel Costs: £70 pp half board per night, based on a twin room includes evening meal and breakfast (see entry/exit points for minimum period of stay)
  • In event support staff contribution: £150/athlete
  • Back office admin £50
  • Media services £30 – includes cost of in-event photography, images licensed for personal use.

 

GBR Pathway Subsidy

The GBR Pathway Programme will be subsidising the costs to athletes of competing at the Europeans, including contributions to:

  • Chef de Mission
  • Support Staff
  • Coaches
  • Athlete well-being support (Sports science and medicine)
  • Performance Coaching Support (this is 100% covered by BF using a coach development budget)

There are also means tested grants available to athletes who would be unable to attend without financial support. For more information please contact [email protected]. Athletes who are paying for personal coaches or whose families are planning to travel to attend the event are not eligible for grants.

Official Tracksuit, Patches and Sponsor Logos

Tracksuits

We will contact you to arrange the kit order if you do not have the official tracksuit for the 2025 Senior European Championships.

More information about which tracksuit you need, vouchers and how to order additional kit here. 

As a reminder, under the FIE rules, the Official National Tracksuit must be worn in full – both tops and trousers – on podiums. (No club tracksuits, cycling shorts, leggings etc).

 

GBR Patches

You are responsible for ensuring your kit has the correct GBR patches and that your equipment meets FIE standards.

 

Sponsor Logos

As part of the terms of the Leon Paul sponsorship arrangement, all athletes competing are required to wear a Leon Paul logo.

Athletes are responsible for ensuring that any other sponsor logos are placed and sized in accordance with the FIE Publicity Code.

Authorised Personal Coaches - Deadline 26th January

Requirements for Personal Coaches wishing to be accredited at Major Events

These include (this is not an exhaustive list please click on the links for more information)

  • being on the Coach Register (UK) or the Coach Register (Overseas) 
  • having completed the UKAD Anti-Doping course and uploaded the certificate to Sport 80
  • holding a valid EFC Licence.
  • consistently demonstrating suitable coaching behaviours and are not currently being investigated
  • having an up-to-date Coach Health Check – Personal Development Plan
  • being the coach of a fencer in selection places 1-4
  • being the coach of an athlete that has met the qualification standard for selection

Where there is a limit to the number of personal coaches that will be accredited priority will be given to personal coaches that have a evidential track record of positive engagement and collaboration with BF support staff /other GBR coaches and whose athletes are on a trajectory to medal success.

All coaches must abide by the relevant BF policies (including the GBR Coaches Policy) and codes of conduct, including the GBR Coaches Code of Conduct.

Discipline and Behaviour

By accepting selection to represent GBR at any European and World Championships, you have already agreed to the BF Codes of Conduct – which includes the generic BF Code of Conduct, the Code of Conduct for Youth Events and the GBR Athlete Code of Conduct.

Please act responsibly and sensibly, and understand that we are one collective team. Respect and support for your fellow team members is expected and reasonable.

Every squad member is supported by public funding and is expected to behave in a way that recognises the responsibility that this brings. Funding to compete (whether from public or private sources) is not an entitlement, and we owe it to everyone who contributes to our participation to act as professionals and role models for our sport.

As a reminder, Cadet and Junior Championships events are alcohol-free for the entire duration of the stay, and any athlete consuming alcohol should expect to serve a ban in accordance with the published sanctions. They may also be sent home from the event, be withdrawn from any remaining events and be liable for all arising costs. Parents and Personal Coaches attending events are expected to support athletes and are respectfully requested to refrain from consuming alcohol if they are in the company of athletes.

Any breach of the BF Code of Conduct may also result in fines equivalent to any athlete subsidy paid by BF.

Anti-Doping

There will be testing at the event.

Athletes are solely responsible for any banned substance they use, attempt to use, or that is found in their system, regardless of how it got there and whether or not they had an intention to cheat. Athletes must:

Safeguarding

There will be EFC Safeguarding Officers at the event and the FIE Safeguarding policy and the EFC Safeguarding Code of Conduct will be in place for all participants.

BF welfare policies and codes of conduct apply to athletes, coaches, parents and supporters associated with the GBR team.

There will also be mandatory training (which includes specific training on the FIE safeguarding policy) for all those selected and those that intend to accompany them.

Social Media

Athletes who are selected for major championships are encouraged to use the hashtag #GBRFencing on social posts.

Athletes, parents and coaches are encouraged to share their journey and experiences of major competitions. All social media content relating to this competition falls under the BF Code of Conduct. Please remember to ensure all images of fencing, including warming up and coaching reflect best practices in regards to conduct and safety.

Where podium photos or group photos are taken those in the photo are requested to look at the camera.

All athletes that make a podium will be expected to provide a quote prior to the medal presentation to help the BF media team celebrate the result in a timely manner.
