Cadet Number One benefits from local support

New Eltham based seventeen year old, Jonathan Webb is now supported by Greenwich Starting Blocks Trust.  The charity is committed to supporting young people achieve their sporting dreams and provides bursaries to local up-and-coming talent.

Webb has represented Great Britain for the past three seasons and won silver and bronze medals during last season’s international cadet circuit.  He is also the 2012 UK School Games sabre champion.

Speaking about the award, Webb said; “This year it was a great honour to be made a Starting Blocks ambassador for the Royal Borough of Greenwich.  I am very grateful for the support and funding that Starting Blocks have given me at various levels over the past four years.  The funding has helped with my competition fees and the buying of some kit.”

He added; “As well as the funding, the free membership to all of GLL’s gyms in London was very welcome, as in my early years this encouraged me to start going to the gym. I am now on a full strength and conditioning programme with British Fencing.  As well as my S&C training this year I have also been identified for and selected onto British Fencing’s talent programme. This is a big step towards my future ambitions and I am also very grateful to British Fencing and Beazley for giving me this opportunity.”

British Fencing’s Head of Pathway Development, Joanna Cook, added; “Jonathan clearly has the right stuff to make it to the top if he continues to develop and train the way that he is.  With Beazley’s support, British Fencing has put him into our talent programme so that we can monitor and support him as best we can.  Additional funding is always crucial for developing talent so I am delighted that Jonathan is being supported by Starting Blocks.”
