Last day of Championships is a tough one for GBR

The final stages of the Cadet & Junior European Championships started today with team events in Junior Women’s Epee, Women’s Foil and Men’s Sabre.

Junior Women’s Epee Team

Fifteen teams took part in this event including one from Great Britain (Cormack, Gundry, Powell and Radford).  GBR were ranked thirteenth so faced Hungary in the round of 16.  Hungary eased to victory 45-25.  In the placings matches GBR lost 45-38, had a bye through the 13-16 match and then beat Finland 45-42 to finish 13th.  Poland beat Italy 45-44 in the gold medal match with France beating Russia 38-36 for the bronze medal.

Junior Women’s Foil Team

Only ten teams took part in this event including one from Great Britain (Yvonne Chart, Chloe Dickson, Ayesha Fihosy and Kate Smith) who were the bottom seeds.  They agonizingly lost 36-33 to Romania in the round of 16 having led going into the eighth leg.  They had just one placings match for 9-10 place that they won 45-17 over Israel.

The gold medal went to ITA who beat RUS 45-35 in the final.  France defeated Poland 45-38 for the bronze medal.

Junior Women’s Sabre Team

Twelve teams fought for the title of European Women’s Sabre Team Champions but not one from Great Britain.

France beat Russia 45-43 to take the gold medal whilst Italy beat Hungary 45-44 for bronze.

Italy topped the medal table with seven gold medals from the Championships.  Their closest rivals were Poland and Russia.
