Italy and Switzerland take the last gold medals in the individual events

Day eight of the Championships was the last day of individual events and featured Junior Women’s Epee and Junior Men’s Sabre.

Junior Women’s Epee

Seventy-five competitors took part in this event including four British fencers.  Eleanor Cormack and Jessica Gundry only managed to win one of there six first round fights and missed the cut for the elimination stages.  Elisabeth Powell and Amy Radford both won three of their six poule fights and made it through to the round of 64.  There, Camille Hazard (FRA) knocked Powell out 15-8 and Victoria Kuzmenkova (RUS) beat Radford by the same score.

Pauline Brunnier (SUI) won the gold medal beating Roberta Marzani (ITA) 15-10 in the final. Reka Bohus (HUN) and Kamila Pytka (POL) won the bronze medals.

GB placing:  Powell 42nd, Radford 43rd, Gundry 63 & Cormack 69th.

Junior Men’s Sabre

Great Britain had just one entry for this event as Jonathan Webb formed part of a 53-strong field.  He started well winning five of his six first round matches that earned him a bye through the incomplete round of 64.  In the round of 32 he was unlucky to come up against an in-form Belarusian by the name of Siarhei Kisel.  He lost 15-5.

Luca Curatoli (ITA) beat Kostiantyn Voronov (UKR) to take the title with Artem Buchkovskiy (RUS) and Maxence Lambert (FRA) taking home the bronze medals.

GB placing:  Webb 24th.
