I want to attend a course. How and where do I sign up for one?
All courses are listed on the Upcoming Courses page on the BF website.
If you do not see any courses or if those that are published are inaccessible to you, please use our Expression of Interest Form to let us know which course you are interested in.
What does each level of Team Manager training cover?
There are two levels of Team Manager training, as described below:
I used to be on the Team Manager register but now I am not. Why?
You have been removed from the register because one or several registration documents have expired. You should have received an email recently explaining this and how to go about renewing your documents. If you have not received an email, please use our General Enquiries Form to let us know of this. Please select Workforce from the menu options.
I have got all of my registration documents together. Where or whom do I send them to?
Please upload your documents to your Sport:80 profile. See our help page on Uploading Certificates to Sport:80.
I am a registered Team Manager and have just received an email entitled 'First Aid Notice/DBS Notice/Safeguarding Notice'.
You have received this email because according to our records, one/several of your registration documents expire in three months and will require renewal shortly.
To avoid being removed from the register, we urge you to address this issue as soon as possible using the instructions in the email.
I need to do another DBS check through British Fencing. How do I go about getting a new one?
If you are based in England or Wales, you will need to contact BF.
Once you have received the new certificate, you will need to subscribe to the online updating service and permit us to check your DBS certificate. Please do this using our Permission to Access Information form. Full information regarding the DBS application process can be found on our Quick Guide to DBS Checks page.
I have a DBS Enhanced Disclosure certificate from my place of work. Can I use that instead of doing a BF DBS application form?
Unfortunately, BF is not able to accept checks obtained through other organisations, e.g. schools, unless you have registered with the Online Update Service. If you are registered, we can only accept a check that is for a similar type of role and with the same workforce.
Current and potential Team Managers in Northern Ireland and Scotland need to complete their equivalent criminal records checks: Access NI and DisclosureScotland.
Do I have to pay for my DBS check?
The DBS application and annual online update service annual renewal checks for volunteers are free. There is a £6 admin fee for all checks and a charge for document verification.
My first aid course is about to expire. How do I go about getting a new one?
You need to attend a first aid course. BF’s minimum requirement for this is the ‘Emergency First Aid at Work’ certificate as laid out by the Health and Safety Executive.
You may be able to find details of courses through your County Sport Partnership, or one of the many providers available. The cost of these can vary significantly, so you are advised to shop around.
I am a doctor/nurse/GP/medically trained person. Do I still need to attend a first aid course?
No. If you can provide evidence that you have attended annual/register basic first aid training as part of your medical training (i.e. BLS or ALS), then you do not have to attend a first aid course. Please use our General Enquiries Form to let us know of this, please select Workforce from the menu options.
My Safeguarding and Protecting Children qualification is about to expire. How do I go about getting a new one?
You need to attend one of the BF-approved safeguarding workshops. If you are based in England and Wales from July 2023 onwards, you will need to attend the British Fencing SafeGuard Core. Check a list of BF’s Upcoming Courses or other approved courses.
I am a teacher/youth worker/trained to work with children for my job. Do I still need to attain a safeguarding course?
Yes, you do, as you will need to have covered good practice and understand safeguarding within a sporting context.
I am a registered Team Manager. Why have I just received an email entitled 'Removal from Workforce Register'?
Unless there are exceptional circumstances, you have been removed from the Workforce Register because one/several of your registration documents have been out of date for three months or more. The email will give you instructions on how to go about renewing these documents.
You will not be reinstated to the register until you submit or upload any outstanding paperwork or certificates.
Why is my email address not listed on the Team Manager Register?
We do not publicly list contact details on the Team Manager Register for data protection reasons; however, the register held by British Fencing has all of your contact details recorded.
How do I change my personal details on the Team Manager Register?
If you want to change your details on the Team Manager Register, please change them through your BF Membership Profile. Please see our Membership Support page for help.
How can I check to see if someone is a registered Team Manager?
The Team Manager Register is under review. If you require information about registered Team Managers, please use our General Enquiries Form to let us know of this. Please select Workforce from the menu options.
Am I insured to be a Team Manager via my BF membership?
Yes, your BF membership covers you under the BF public liability insurance.
For more information on insurance issues, please see the Insurance section in the BF policy on our website.
How long does my Team Manager qualification last?
If you are a registered Team Manager and it has been more than five years since you attended your course, please contact our Workforce Development Officer using our General Enquiries Form to let us know of this. Please select Workforce from the menu options.
If you have a question that has not been answered in the above FAQ, please use our General Enquiries Form.
