Strachan Award the British Empire Medal

Congratulations to Linda Strachan who has recently been award the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to community sport.  Linda, a two-time British Olympic fencer, is the founder of Newham Swords fencing club, which this year celebrates it’s tenth anniversary.

Speaking about the award she said; “I am thrilled to bits to receive such a prestigious award.  I have really enjoyed watching Newham Swords Fencing Club grow from just being a few fencers on a single badminton court into one of the most successful junior fencing clubs in the country.  This achievement would not have been possible without the efforts of Pierre Harper, Head Coach of Newham Swords, who has given up so much of his time to make the club what it is today.”

“The highlight of my work with Newham Swords is helping a very talented bunch of individuals realise their dream of representing GB and giving local youngsters the chance to use fencing as a means of helping them develop emotionally as well as physically.  My next project with Pierre is to get one of our fencers to an Olympic Games – that would be special!”

Everyone at British Fencing is delighted by this news and wish Linda the very best of luck.
