Report from the Epee World Cups in Buenos Aires and Vancouver

The senior international season continued at the weekend with epee events in Argentina and Canada.

Women’s Epee World Cup – Buenos Aires

One hundred and fifty-eight fencers took part in the epee World Cup in Buenos Aires including Mary Cohen, Corinna Lawrence and Abbi Mathews from Great Britain.  Lawrence (V4D2) and Matthews (V2D4) progressed through the first round but Cohen (V1D5) did not make the cut.  Lawrence had done enough to progress through the first preliminary knockout fight with a bye but Matthews lost 15-11 to Ngom (FRA).  Lawrence went on to win her second preliminary elimination fight 15-10 against Bassa (USA) to make the 64 where she met Del Carretto (ITA).  Despite a strong performance the Italian progressed 15-13.

Sarra Besbes (TUN) won the gold medal beating Erika Kirpu (EST) 15-14 in the final as Britta Heidemann (GER) and Shin A Lam (KOR) completed the podium by taking the bronze medals.

The twenty-two entries to the team event did not include one from Great Britain.  Italy went on to beat Romania 30-26 to take the gold medal with Germany taking the bronze by beating Russia 31-29.

GB individual placings:  Lawrence 56th, Matthews 111th & Cohen 142nd.

Men’s Epee World Cup – Vancouver

One hundred seventy-six fencers took part in this event but there were no entries from Great Britain.  Ronan Gustin (FRA) took the title beating Pavel Pitra (CZE) 15-14 in the final.  Jisun Jung (KOR) and Ruben Limardo Gascon (VEN) took the bronze medals home.

Switzerland came through a field of twenty-three teams to take the gold medal beating Ukraine 45-41 in the final.  France beat Hungary 45-28 for the bronze medal.  Great Britain did not enter a team.

The 2014/15 senior season continues this weekend with sabre World Cup events in Ghent and Warsaw.
