Report from the Epee Grand Prix in Doha

Doha, Qatar hosted the first epee Grand Prix of the season with both men and women competing over three days.

Men’s Epee

Tomas Curran Jones and Gareth Thomas represented Great Britain in the men’s event forming part of the one hundred and fifty-strong field.  Neither did enough to make it through the poules – Curran Jones (V2D4) and Thomas (V1D4).

Daniel Jerent (FRA) went on to take the gold medal beating Peer Borsky (SUI) 15-8 in the final.  Enrico Garozzo (ITA) and Gauthier Grumier (FRA) finished in the bronze medal positions.

GB individual placings:  Curran Jones 120th & Thomas 129th.

Women’s Epee

Four British fencers competed in this event joining a field of 121.  Corinna Lawrence, Abbi Matthews and Katrina Smith won three of their six poule matches to progress to the preliminary knockout stage.  Mary Cohen only took one victory from her six first round matches, which meant that she did not progress.  No British fencer made it to the round of 64 as Lawrence fell 15-13 to Nelip (POL), Choi (KOR) defeated Matthews 15-13 and Mallo (FRA) beat Smith 15-12.

Simona Gherman (ROM) won the event beating Erika Kirpu (EST) 15-9 in the gold medal match.  Bianca Del Carretto (ITA) and Emese Szasz (HUN) had to settle for the bronze medals.

GB Individual Placing:  Lawrence 76th, Matthews 86th, Smith 88th & Cohen 111th.
