Francesca Summers selected to compete at the Youth Olympic Games

British Fencing is pleased to announce that Francesca Summers will be the first British female to compete in the Modern Pentathlon event at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, later this year.  Her qualification comes as a result of her tremendous results at the recent Under 19 World Championships where she came home with the individual bronze and team gold medals.

Fencing is only one part of this five-discipline event but Francesca recognizes its importance.  “At the high performance level of Modern Pentathlon there is no longer any chance of success if you do not have five strong events.  However, if you are going to have one event which is stronger than the others, the points structure dictates, it is best to have the ‘fence’ as your trump card.  British Fencing has helped me to reach my goals so far and with continued support I hope to go on to even bigger and better things in future.”

A spokesperson for British Fencing said; “Many congratulations to Francesca and her support team.  We wish her all the best in Nanjing.”

Francesca was keen to recognize one person in particular, saying; “My fencing coach of many years Matt Haynes deserves a particular mention here.  Thank you Matt.  He will be out in China with me.”
