2025 BF HONOURS: JENNIFER SANCROFT

As nominations for the 2026 BF Honours open, we’re shining a spotlight on last year’s recipients. In this feature, we speak to Jennifer Sancroft, who received a Bronze Medal for work of more than a decade improving the quality of British refereeing, in particular running specific initiatives to support female candidates.

Tell us about the work you do to support fencing…

I currently volunteer as a referee, mentor and educator alongside refereeing at FIE events and supporting the admin behind the scenes at my own fencing club. I am particularly passionate about developing new referees and encouraging inclusion within refereeing.

What is your favourite memory of your time volunteering in fencing?

Not long after I had stopped competing internationally, I refereed at an event in Belgium. On the way back, the other refs and some athletes stopped in Brussels for dinner and it was a lovely relaxed environment with great chat and good food. I think it’s great to be able to enjoy the social aspect of volunteering as well as putting in the work in the sports hall.

What does it mean to receive the 2025 BF Honours award?

It’s lovely to be recognised for contributing to the development of our sport. I really feel that volunteering in general, post-covid, has declined considerably and I think it’s important for volunteers to know how important their contributions are. I hope it encourages others to take up volunteering.

What would you say to people considering volunteering in fencing or sport in general?

Do it! Your contribution is needed and valued. It’s a great way to make friends and contacts and can take you places you might never have imagined. AND, everyone is welcome.

ABOUT THE BF HONOURS

BF Honours are awarded to members who have demonstrably upheld the BF values of honesty, respect and excellence, all while making a significant contribution to fencing in the UK. Awards are conferred annually and announced and presented at the AGM by the BF President.

Fencers who have represented GBR either as an individual or as a team member and have achieved a podium place in specific categories will automatically be recommended for an appropriate award.

Nominations for the 2026 BF Honours are open and close on the 29th May 2026. Click here to make your nomination.
