As nominations for the 2026 BF Honours open, we’re shining a spotlight on last year’s recipients. In this feature, we speak to Neil Bromley, who received a Bronze Medal for contribution to our sport among those of all backgrounds, especially the young and disadvantaged, in the Swindon and Wiltshire area.

Tell us about the work you do to support fencing…
I run Swindon Fencing Club, including our primary school outreach programme, which to date has seen over 5000 children discover and experience our sport. We nurture their self-confidence and ability with sword-in-hand to achieve their BF Level 1 Foil Achievement Award. We also encourage them to attend Swindon Fencing Club. We are only just getting started because 8 and then 10,000 children are our next milestones.
What is your favourite memory of your time volunteering in fencing?
There are too many to choose from… I have the best job in the world because I witness golden fencing moments every time I’m involved in fencing. The most satisfying ones are seeing children’s growth through our sport. Every moment is unique to each child, whether that is simply coming along to fence and enjoying it, witnessing their self-belief and self-confidence grow, making new friends and sharing experiences together, mastering new blade strokes or Achievement Awards. There’s so many happening every day.
What does it mean to receive the 2025 BF Honours award?
I’m thrilled to have received an award. When I started fencing as a bright blonde-haired eight-year-old, I never would have believed fencing would become such an intrinsic part of my life.
What would you say to people considering volunteering in fencing or sport in general?
Do it – get stuck in and help. Like all sports, fencing needs people to volunteer because it will enrich their lives as volunteers as well as those who fence. Volunteering can involve everyone and everyone can feel better because of it.
BF Honours are awarded to members who have demonstrably upheld the BF values of honesty, respect and excellence, all while making a significant contribution to fencing in the UK. Awards are conferred annually and announced and presented at the AGM by the BF President.
Fencers who have represented GBR either as an individual or as a team member and have achieved a podium place in specific categories will automatically be recommended for an appropriate award.
